Junk removal in Lakewood
Lakewood is the most populous township in Ocean County, with about 135,000 people counted in the 2020 census on roughly 25 square miles. It took the name Lakewood in 1880 and became a fashionable winter resort. George Jay Gould's estate is now Georgian Court University, and land donated by John D. Rockefeller's family became Ocean County Park. The township has four man-made lakes, including Lake Carasaljo, and it takes in Leisure Village, a condominium retirement community that opened for sale in 1963, along with sections like Greenville and South Lakewood.
Lakewood's Department of Public Works collects household trash, and bulk items go out once a month by zone, but only if you call Public Works ahead of time to get on the list. Furniture, metal and electronics are picked up separately. Construction debris, tree stumps and logs aren't picked up at the curb at all. - Lakewood Township (ZIP 08701) is one municipality. Lakewood, Leisure Village and Leisure Village East are census-designated places inside it, and Greenville, Seven Stars and South Lakewood are other place names in the township. None of them is a separate town.
- Township bulk pickup runs once a month for each of Lakewood's four zones. You must call Public Works in advance to register, and nothing is picked up unless you call. When you call, you're told what date to put your items out, and a request made on the day of pickup rolls to the following month.
- Bulk items fall into three categories, each collected by its own truck: furniture (dining sets, bedroom sets, couches and mattresses, which must be wrapped), metal (bed frames, washers, dryers, water heaters, bicycles, and refrigerators with the doors off) and electronics (TVs, computers, laptops, printers and fax machines only).
- Construction and demolition material, tree stumps and logs are not picked up at the curb, and the township says residents must make private arrangements for them. It also tells residents to find a vendor for concrete, bricks and cinder blocks, and for paint, chemicals and motor oil it refers residents to Ocean County's Northern Recycling Center on New Hampshire Avenue in Lakewood.
- There's no curbside pickup for tires or car batteries. Residents can bring them to Public Works at 1 America Avenue (up to five tires per household, from cars and small trucks, off the rim). Computers and electronics can be dropped off there too, along with clothing, handbags, belts and shoes.
