Junk removal in Toms River
Toms River is the Ocean County seat and the eighth-most-populous municipality in New Jersey, with about 95,000 people in the 2020 census. It was called Dover Township until voters approved the name change in 2006. Most of the township is on the mainland, including the downtown village and sections like Silverton, Gilford Park and Pleasant Plains, but it also reaches across Barnegat Bay onto the barrier peninsula at Ortley Beach and part of Normandy Beach. Nearly a quarter of its 53 square miles is water.
Public Works collects household trash, using automated Robo cans in some areas, and residents can request one bulk pickup a month for items that don't fit in the can. Metal and non-metal bulk are separate pickups. The township won't pick up construction debris, move-outs or an excessive volume, and for a large amount of debris it tells residents to contact a private removal service. - A Toms River mailing address doesn't always mean Toms River Township. Toms River addresses also cover South Toms River and parts of Manchester and Berkeley, and ZIP 08757 lies almost entirely outside the township. Those are separate municipalities, so the township's trash rules don't apply there. Most of the township itself uses ZIP 08753 or 08755, and Ortley Beach shares ZIP 08751 with Seaside Heights.
- Toms River Township allows one bulk collection a month for items that don't fit in the Robo can, in two types: metal and bulk (non-metal). You call Public Works to get on the list and describe the items. Air conditioners, refrigerators and dehumidifiers need a sticker from a licensed service company showing the Freon was removed, and carpet must be cut into four-foot strips, rolled, tied and weigh no more than 50 pounds each. Furniture doesn't have to be cut up.
- The township's Recycling Convenience Center on Church Road is for Toms River Township residents with proof of residency, such as a driver's license, utility bill or tax bill. Contractors and commercial vehicles aren't allowed, vehicles can be no larger than a pickup truck, and household items are limited to two visits a month. According to the township's partial list, which it says may change, the center accepts furniture (including pianos, organs and pool tables), metal, electronics, windows and doors, dismantled garage doors, and car and light-truck tires off the rim.
- The township won't pick up construction or demolition debris at the curb. Residents may bring up to two 35-gallon containers of it to the Convenience Center twice a month, and it must be containerized. Larger amounts have to go to an approved landfill, such as the Ocean County Landfill on Route 70 in Manchester Township, brought by the resident, a contractor or a licensed hauler.
- The Convenience Center's not-accepted list includes boats and trailers, cars and car parts, fire-damaged material, asbestos shingles, and dirt, sand and fill. The township directs hazardous products like gasoline, kerosene, chlorine and stains to Ocean County's hazardous material collection instead.
