Hamilton Township is the most populous municipality in Mercer County, with about 92,000 residents on roughly 40 square miles just east of Trenton. It has no true downtown. Instead it's a collection of communities such as Hamilton Square, Mercerville, Yardville, Groveville and White Horse, all part of the one township. Hamilton collects household garbage at the curb twice a week, and on the second collection day of the week you can set out a few bulky items, like a couch, a toilet or a mattress wrapped in plastic.
The township is clear that this service is for the occasional large item or debris from a small project. For bigger construction jobs or home, garage and basement cleanouts, it tells residents to make other arrangements with a disposal company. That's the kind of job we do. - On the second regular trash day of the week, the township allows up to three bulk items at the curb, and they count toward that day's total bag and container limit. Mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic. Carpet, wood and fencing have to be cut down, tied into bundles and kept to 50 pounds or less, and work done by contractors won't be picked up.
- Appliances and other metal items (water heaters, stoves, washers, dryers, grills), refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, and electronics such as TVs and computers have their own curbside pickup. Before putting them out, you arrange it through the township's HamStat call center at 609-586-0311 or an online service request, and refrigerator and freezer doors must be removed first. They can also be dropped off at the Ecological Facility.
- The township's Ecological Facility at 1360 Kuser Road takes drop-offs from Hamilton residents, including metal items, TVs, computer equipment and passenger tires with the rims removed. Tires can't go out at the curb, and commercial vehicles are charged a dumping fee.
- Concrete, cinder blocks, bricks and blacktop are not accepted at the curb or at the Ecological Facility. The township tells residents to contact a private disposal company for those.
