Lawrence Township has about 33,000 residents on roughly 22 square miles in Mercer County, and it borders both Trenton and Princeton. It's home to the Lawrenceville School, Rider University and Quaker Bridge Mall. Many people call the whole township Lawrenceville, but Lawrenceville is really the historic village inside it, and some residents have Princeton or Trenton mailing addresses. Township Public Works collects trash at the curb in Township-issued carts, and once a month it picks up bulky items that are too big for the cart.
That monthly pickup has tight limits. Each household gets a small number of items, each one has a weight limit, big pieces have to be broken down first, and appliances and other metal go by appointment. Construction materials, roofing and cement blocks aren't taken on bulk day, and the township has no municipal dump for garbage. - Lawrenceville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place inside Lawrence Township, not a separate town. Most of the township uses ZIP 08648, and the Postal Service changed that ZIP's preferred name to Lawrence Township in 2007. Some residents have Princeton or Trenton mailing addresses but still live in Lawrence Township.
- At the monthly curbside bulk pickup, residents are allowed three bulky items, and the township's garbage page says each item can weigh no more than 50 pounds. Items go next to your blue cart, not inside it, large items must be broken down into manageable pieces, and anything too big for the truck's hopper is left behind.
- Mattresses and box springs must be completely wrapped in plastic. Carpet must be cut into sections no wider than 5 feet and tied in bundles of 50 pounds or less, wooden fencing must be cut into 4-foot lengths, and windows and mirrors must be taped in a criss-cross.
- Ovens, refrigerators, washers, dryers and other metal items are collected by appointment only through Public Works at 609-587-1894. The bulky pickup excludes all construction materials, roofing, asphalt, cement blocks, asbestos, metal fence, propane or gas tanks, railroad ties and treated lumber, sod, and chemical or pesticide containers.
- The Township's Ecological Facility on Princeton Pike is for Lawrence residents only, with landscapers and commercial vehicles prohibited. It takes electronics such as computers, monitors, printers and TVs (proof of residency required) and tires with the rims removed. Some streets get private trash service through a housing association instead of the Township.
