Junk removal in West Windsor
West Windsor is a township of about 26 square miles on the eastern edge of Mercer County. It takes in Princeton Junction, home to a busy train station on the Northeast Corridor, and older crossroads villages like Dutch Neck, Penns Neck, Edinburg and Grover's Mill, where Orson Welles set the Martian landing in his 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast. It was mostly farmland until a housing boom in the late 20th century. Some homes here have Princeton mailing addresses, but they still follow West Windsor's trash rules.
The township's garbage hauler takes one or two bulk items, like a couch or a table, out with your regular weekly trash, and Public Works picks up appliances and metal items if you call ahead. Homes in the township use ZIP 08550 (Princeton Junction) or 08540 (Princeton), and either way they follow West Windsor's rules, not Princeton's.
- The township's contracted hauler collects household garbage once a week and takes one to two bulk items per pickup, such as couches, tables, plastic furniture, shelving units and small appliances, on your regular garbage day with no need to call ahead. All mattresses must be completely wrapped in plastic, and anything larger than a twin has to be folded in half and tied. Carpet must be cut into sections no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet, rolled and tied.
- The hauler won't take railroad ties, pianos, concrete, brick or stone, construction or demolition debris, household appliances, patio furniture or hazardous materials. The township also says it can only take small amounts of trash and furniture when you move out, and the Public Works Facility does not accept household trash.
- Public Works runs a separate weekly curbside collection for appliances and mostly-metal items, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, air conditioners, metal patio furniture, lawn mowers, bicycles, exercise equipment and metal bed frames. You call Public Works ahead of time to get on the list, refrigerator and freezer doors must come off, and mowers must be drained of oil and gas. Residents can also drop these items at the Public Works Facility during resident drop-off hours.
- Electronics shouldn't go to the curb. The Public Works Facility at 70 Southfield Road takes TVs, computers, monitors, printers and other electronics from residents during drop-off hours, but not smoke alarms, thermostats or equipment containing gas or oil.
