Mount Holly is the Burlington County seat, a township of under three square miles on Rancocas Creek. It began as Northampton in 1688 and took the name Mount Holly in 1931, after a hill just north of downtown partly covered with holly trees. Downtown is the Mount Holly Historic District, lined with 18th- and 19th-century buildings, and the 1811 Burlington County Prison is a National Historic Landmark. The township says it has housing for every size of family, from apartments to townhomes and condos.
Trash pickup is contracted out and comes once a week. You can set one large item, like a sofa, at the curb with each weekly collection, and appliances and metal go out on a separate pickup you request ahead of time. But the township says large amounts from a move-out or cleanout won't be picked up, and asks for a dumpster scheduled through its Construction/Housing Department. Residents have to take it to the county Resource Recovery Complex in Florence.
