Which Burlington towns take a mattress with the trash
Burlington County doesn't collect trash. It sends those questions to each municipality, so curbside mattress pickup is up to your town or its hauler, and the rules change at every town line. Here's how the towns we cover handle it:
- Mansfield takes furniture, mattresses and box springs included, at the curb on your regular trash day. The township limits each pickup to six items, and your regular trash counts toward the six.
- Mount Holly takes one large item with each weekly trash collection. Every mattress and box spring has to be sealed in a mattress bag or other plastic. For a move-out or cleanout, the township says to schedule a dumpster with its Construction/Housing Department, and large piles at the curb won't be picked up and can bring a code enforcement violation.
- Florence: the township has said large items that can't be recycled, mattresses included, go to the curb with regular trash, a manageable amount at a time. Its trash page sets a 30 to 50 lb limit on each bulk item and says move-outs need their own arrangements, such as a dumpster. Florence also says large items can go to the county landfill.
- Burlington City picks up bulk every other Friday by appointment only. Call Public Works at 609-386-0754 ext. 1 by noon on the Wednesday before, and set items out the night before. The limit is two items per household, each no more than 75 lbs, and mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in bags. The city's 2026 sheet lists the remaining bulk dates as Oct 30, Nov 13, Nov 28, Dec 11 and Dec 26. Nov 28 and Dec 26 are Saturdays, moved for the holidays.
- In Burlington Township, a mattress or box spring can't go out with regular trash. The trash company collects bulk every other Thursday by appointment, so call Public Works at 609-239-5909 before anything goes to the curb. Residents can also bring a mattress to the township Compost Site at 902 Lake Avenue, where it doesn't have to be in plastic. Bring proof of residency, and expect the attendants to turn away large quantities.
- Chesterfield's recycling drop-off at 300 Bordentown-Chesterfield Rd lists paper, cardboard, bottles, cans, batteries, electronics, clean wood, brush, leaves, plastic bags, textiles, metal and white goods. Mattresses aren't on the list, so ask the township or your trash hauler about bulk pickup.
- North Hanover runs a residents-only Waste Facility at 49 Meany Road. You need an annual sticker from the township, bought at the municipal building or by mail. The facility doesn't sell them. The township's trash page doesn't say whether mattresses are taken there, so call the facility at 609-758-1727 first.
- Bordentown Township picks up bulk twice a month by zone, by appointment only: call Public Works or send the Township's online request form by the Thursday cutoff. Up to six items go per pickup, and mattresses and box springs must be in plastic bags, which Public Works on Crosswicks Road gives out free. Bordentown City residents put bulk at the curb on their regular trash day, with no call needed.
Bag it, and check the weight limit
Plastic is the rule that trips people up. Burlington City wants every mattress and box spring wrapped in bags, Bordentown Township wants them in plastic bags (free from its Public Works), and Mount Holly requires a mattress bag or other plastic. Elsewhere, buy a mattress bag at a hardware store, seal it with tape, and give the box spring its own bag.
Then check the limits. Burlington City caps bulk items at 75 lbs each, Florence's trash page says 30 to 50 lbs per bulk item, and Mansfield counts a mattress toward its six items per pickup. If the mattress is heavy or you're setting out a whole bedroom set, call Public Works before it goes to the curb.
Burlington City's own recycling drop-off on Jacksonville Road doesn't take furniture. The city points those items to the county landfill or a dumpster at your own expense.
Drop it at the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex
The county's Resource Recovery Complex is at 22000 Burlington-Columbus Road in Florence, off the Columbus exit (52A) of I-295. It's open Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm and Saturday 7am to noon, closed Sundays and major holidays, and the phone number is 609-499-5300. It takes solid waste from all 40 towns in the county.
It has a mattress drop-off for clean and dry mattresses and box springs only. In the county's words, "Staff will determine if items can be recycled or disposed of as trash." Before you go:
- Weigh in at the scalehouse first. Staff will send you to the Convenience Center, which is for small truck or car loads unloaded by hand.
- A fee applies. Check the amount with the scalehouse before you go.
- Don't rent a truck. The county says vehicles rented from U-Haul, Lowe's, Home Depot, Ryder and similar companies won't be let in to drop off waste.
- Unless you're a resident hauling waste from your own home in a passenger vehicle, the vehicle needs an NJDEP solid waste hauling decal.
- Cover your load. The county's rules say loads must be tarped before entering.
- Payment is cash, business check or credit card. Personal checks aren't accepted.
Recycling happens at the complex, item by item
In Burlington County, the complex's mattress drop-off is where recycling can happen, and staff decide item by item whether a mattress is recycled or thrown out. A used mattress is also hard to pass on in New Jersey, and the state has no mattress recycling program yet; our Monmouth County mattress guide explains the bedding law and the pending bill.
Or we'll haul it for you
Town pickup starts at the curb: Florence says its Public Works crews aren't allowed to enter homes, so getting a king or a pillow-top down the stairs and outside is up to you. If the mattress is upstairs, your pickup date is weeks away, or the whole bedroom is going, text photos to (855) 655-7552 for one upfront price.
We're based in New Egypt, right next door in Ocean County, and Dominic works jobs alongside his crew. We take the bed apart, carry every piece out from whatever floor it's on, load it and sweep up. Loads from Burlington County go to the county's Resource Recovery Complex, and a metal bed frame is recycled when possible. Jobs have a $250 minimum, the price we quote is the price you pay, and same-day and next-day openings are often available.
