East Brunswick is a township of about 22 square miles on the south shore of the Raritan River, with the New Jersey Turnpike (exit 9) and Route 18 running through it. It started out as farm country. Large-scale home and road building, especially after World War II, turned it into a suburb, and after the Turnpike reached town in 1952 the population more than tripled between 1950 and 1960. It also holds the historic village of Old Bridge along the South River, which is part of East Brunswick, not Old Bridge Township next door.
The township collects bulk items at the curb by reservation only, a few items at a time, and it won't take construction materials, electronics, automotive parts or flammable items. The Recycling Center on Dunhams Corner Road is for residents' household materials only, not building or renovation debris. - East Brunswick Township (ZIP 08816) was formed in 1860 from parts of Monroe and North Brunswick. Pieces of it later became South River, Helmetta, Milltown and Spotswood, which are now separate municipalities with their own trash rules.
- Trash and recycling pickup is handled under township contracts managed by the Department of Public Works, using roll-out carts. The township's bulk flyer defines bulk waste as any item too large to fit inside your cart.
- Bulk collection needs a reservation, made through the Schedule Bulk Collection form on the township's Solid Waste & Recycling page or by calling the Office of Recycling at (732) 390-6984. The township's flyer says bulk collection is limited to 3 items and rules out construction materials, electronics, automotive parts and flammable items.
- The township Recycling Center at 357 Dunhams Corner Road is for East Brunswick residents only, with proper ID. It takes residential materials only: building and renovation material is not permitted, and contractors, landscapers, tree services and dump trailers are not allowed in.
- Branches are collected separately from regular trash. Call the Office of Recycling to get on the list, and tie branches in bundles no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds. Residents can also drop off unbundled branches at the Recycling Center.
