Spotswood is a small borough, about 2.4 square miles, that split off from East Brunswick in 1908. Its roots go back to a 1685 settlement named Spottiswoode after the first settler's home in Scotland. The Camden and Amboy Railroad reached town in 1832, and a trackside memorial stands near East Spotswood Park. The Manalapan Brook and Matchaponix Brook meet inside the borough to form the South River, and the main roads through town include Main Street, Summerhill Road, Devoe Avenue and Manalapan Road.
The borough's Public Works department picks up bulk items like furniture and windows at the curb, but only by appointment, and lumber has to be cut and tied with the nails removed or bent over. That works well for a piece or two you can get to the curb. - Brush pickup is also by appointment. Tree parts must be no more than 5 inches in diameter, cut and tied in lengths of no more than 4 feet, and the borough is not responsible for removing anything thicker.
