Marlboro Township covers about 30 square miles of Monmouth County, including Morganville, Robertsville and sections like Wickatunk and Beacon Hill. It was formed from part of Freehold Township in 1848 and named for the marl found here, which farmers spread on their fields. Before World War II it was the country's largest potato grower. Housing developments began replacing farms in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1980s and early 1990s most new developments featured four- or five-bedroom houses, and later came larger estate homes, with plenty of room to fill.
The township doesn't collect household trash. Residents hire their own hauler, and Public Works arranges one curbside bulk collection a year, in the spring, by zone, with weight and volume limits. The rest of the year, residents can take bulk items to the township Recycling Center with a free permit, if they can load and haul them. - Marlboro Township includes the census-designated places of Morganville and Robertsville, plus sections such as Wickatunk, Beacon Hill, Bradevelt, Montrose and Pleasant Valley. Addresses in the township use ZIP 07746 (Marlboro), 07751 (Morganville) or 07726 (Englishtown), so an Englishtown mailing address can still be in Marlboro.
- The township does not pick up household garbage. Residents must contract on their own with a private hauler that serves Marlboro. Township Public Works manages the curbside recycling, leaf, brush and annual bulk collection programs, and it contracts private companies for curbside recycling and the spring bulk pickup.
- The spring bulk collection takes household items such as sofas, chairs, tables, carpeting, refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens and grills (without the propane tank). Appliance doors must be removed, fencing and lumber cut to four feet, and no single item can weigh more than 300 pounds, with a five-cubic-yard limit per home. Once a street is done, the truck won't come back.
- The Recycling Center at the Municipal Complex on Township Drive is for Marlboro residents with proof of residency, and vehicles with commercial, farmer or dealer plates can't use it. Electronics, brush and leaves are accepted with no permit. Furniture, carpeting, appliances, mattresses and a limited number of tires need a free bulk permit.
- The Recycling Center does not accept construction debris, treated lumber, paint, hazardous materials, car parts or batteries. The township's calendar points residents to the Monmouth County Reclamation Center for construction debris.
